In 2013, the artist painted Thai protesters based on photographs taken during the Bangkok Shutdown, a protest that culminated in the military coup of August 2015. This series questions the future of these individuals, drawing parallels to George Orwell’s 1984. At the time of protesting, the subjects are unaware that their movement will be obscured and dismantled by the political machine.“Blackwhite” is a Newspeak term from Orwell’s dystopia, created to limit freedom of thought and suppress concepts threatening the regime. By altering vocabulary, the regime removes ideas of freedom, self-expression, and individuality. This manipulation is so effective that the prohibition becomes invisible. “Blackwhite” also includes “doublethink,” the act of rewriting the past to control the present. It involves believing in something absurd out of respect for authority or fear, erasing real events from memory or transforming them. This series captures the raw energy and hope of the protesters, which will be erased and dehumanized for social order. The paintings engage in prolonged reflection, enduring beyond the transient nature of media coverage.
