Origin of Writing (2016)

Series by Thibaud Tchertchian

This series draws inspiration from the calligraphic qualities of Chinese painting and early writing systems. "The earliest writings were symbols engraved on turtle shells, read in a multidirectional manner, much like painting." The work explores how the evolution from multidirectional to linear writing systems fundamentally shifted human perception of time and space, moving from cyclical understanding to sequential chronological thinking.
