2016 l Origin of Writing

This series draws on the calligraphic quality of Chinese painting, which originates from early forms of writing. The earliest writings were symbols engraved on turtle shells, read in a multidirectional manner, much like painting. Later, writing evolved into cuneiform and began to be read unilaterally. This evolution marked a significant shift in how humans perceive time. The multidirectional nature of early scripts reflects a non-linear, cyclical understanding of time, where past, present, and future coexist. As writing became more linear, our perception of time followed suit, adopting a sequential, unidirectional flow.

Linear writing systems encourage a chronological view of events, promoting the idea of a timeline with a clear beginning, middle, and end. This shift influenced historical documentation and broader cultural and cognitive frameworks, conditioning us to think in terms of cause and effect and linear progression.

Do writing and painting share a common origin? Their intertwined evolution suggests that both art forms have profoundly shaped human cognition and our conceptualization of space and time. Examining this relationship provides deeper insights into how these modes of expression influence our worldview and understanding of reality.
